VDI APU Keyless Drill Chuck Holder VDI30 APU13 APU16 Tool Holder
Traditional drill chucks mounted on separate Morse taper or straight shanks are prone to stack-up tolerances, leading to poor concentricity (runout) and vibration. When used on a CNC lathe turret, this can result in oversized holes and premature drill wear. The Integrated VDI APU Drill Chuck solves this by combining the DIN 69880 VDI shank and the chuck body into one piece of hardened alloy steel. This ultra-rigid construction ensures that the drill bit runs perfectly true to the machine's centerline. Furthermore, the internal gear mechanism is designed to be self-tightening; the harder the drill pushes into the material, the tighter the jaws grip the shank, making it ideal for heavy-duty drilling cycles.
Integrated One-Piece Design: The VDI shank and chuck body are inseparable, providing superior rigidity, eliminating arbor disconnects, and guaranteeing a Total Indicator Runout (T.I.R.) of ≤ 0.05mm.
Keyless Self-Tightening Mechanism: No chuck key is required. Simply hand-tighten the chuck, and the internal mechanism will automatically increase clamping force proportional to the cutting torque during operation.
Titanium-Plated Jaws: The internal clamping jaws are precision-ground and titanium-plated for exceptional wear resistance, ensuring a long lifespan even when repeatedly clamping hard carbide or HSS drill shanks.
DIN 69880 Compatibility: The serrated VDI shank is precision-ground to strict DIN 69880 standards, ensuring a perfect, repeatable fit in Sauter, Duplomatic, and other standard CNC lathe turrets.
Compact Design: The integrated structure is shorter than traditional two-piece setups, maximizing the available Z-axis working envelope on your CNC lathe.
Direct Manufacturer Savings: Bypass trading companies and source premium CNC lathe tooling directly from our factory for highly competitive wholesale pricing.
Popular Size Configurations: We stock the most demanded sizes for modern turning centers:
VDI30 - APU13: Clamps 1.0mm to 13.0mm drills.
VDI40 - APU13: Clamps 1.0mm to 13.0mm drills.
VDI40 - APU16: Clamps 1.0mm to 16.0mm drills.
Premium Material & Treatment: Forged from high-grade alloy steel, deeply case-hardened, and precision-ground for maximum durability in harsh machining environments.
Strict Quality Control: Every VDI APU chuck undergoes rigorous 3D CMM inspection for concentricity, clamping force, and dimensional accuracy before shipment.
Q1: What does "APU" stand for?
A: In the tooling industry, APU designates an integrated keyless drill chuck. Unlike standard drill chucks that require a separate arbor (like a Morse Taper or straight shank arbor) to mount to the machine, an APU chuck has the machine interface (in this case, a VDI shank) machined directly into the back of the chuck body as a single solid piece.
Q2: Can I use this APU drill chuck for milling operations?
A:No. Drill chucks are designed strictly for axial loads (drilling along the Z-axis). They are not designed to handle the radial (side) loads generated during milling. Using a drill chuck for milling will cause the tool to pull out, damage the chuck's internal jaws, and potentially ruin the workpiece. For milling, always use an ER collet chuck or an end mill holder.
Q3: Can I run the spindle in reverse (M04) with this chuck?
A:No. Because the APU chuck features a self-tightening mechanism designed for standard forward rotation (clockwise/M03), running the spindle in reverse while under load will cause the chuck to instantly loosen and release the drill bit. It is strictly for right-hand drilling operations.
Q4: How do I release the drill bit after a heavy cut?
A: The chuck comes with a specialized spanner wrench. After a heavy drilling operation where the self-tightening mechanism has locked down tightly, you use the spanner wrench on the chuck collar to easily break the torque and release the tool.
