The Morse Taper (MT) Drill Chuck Arbor with Tang is an essential tooling component for any machine shop using manual lathes, pillar drill presses, or radial arm drills. Because drill chucks typically have a female internal taper (like a Jacobs Taper or B-Taper), they cannot be mounted directly into a machine's Morse Taper spindle or tailstock. This arbor serves as the precise connection between the two. The "Tang" (the flat portion at the end of the taper) is specifically designed to engage with a slot inside the machine spindle, providing positive torque transmission during heavy drilling and allowing the operator to easily pop the arbor out using a drift key.
Positive Drive Tang: The machined tang prevents the arbor from spinning inside the spindle under heavy drilling loads, protecting both the tool and the machine spindle from galling damage.
High-Precision Grinding: Both the Morse Taper shank and the front mounting taper (JT or B-taper) are precision ground to exacting tolerances, ensuring maximum contact area and a runout (T.I.R.) of ≤ 0.005mm.
Premium Material & Hardness: Constructed from high-quality 20CrMnTi alloy steel. The arbors are case-hardened to HRC 50-55 to resist wear, prevent the tang from twisting, and maintain long-term accuracy.
Comprehensive Size Range: Available in all standard Morse Taper sizes (MT1, MT2, MT3, MT4, MT5, MT6) to fit virtually any drill press or lathe tailstock, with front tapers to match any drill chuck (B10, B12, B16, B18, B22 or JT0, JT1, JT2, JT3, JT6, JT33).
Easy Ejection: The flat end of the tang provides a solid surface for a standard drift key to push against, making tool removal fast and effortless.
Direct Manufacturer Savings: Bypass trading companies and source essential drilling accessories directly from our factory for highly competitive wholesale pricing.
Strict Quality Control: Every arbor is inspected using advanced air gauges to ensure perfect taper angles and concentricity before packaging.
Complete Tooling Solutions: We also manufacture the matching Keyless and Keyed Drill Chucks, allowing you to purchase the complete, ready-to-use assembly from a single reliable supplier.
OEM & Customization: We offer laser engraving of your brand logo and part numbers directly onto the arbors for retail packaging.
Q1: What is the exact purpose of the "Tang" on the end of the arbor?
A: The tang serves two critical purposes:
Anti-Rotation: It engages with a matching slot inside the drill press spindle or lathe tailstock, preventing the arbor from spinning when drilling large holes.
Ejection: It provides a flat surface for a "drift key" (a wedge-shaped tool) to press against, allowing you to easily knock the arbor out of the taper.
Q2: What is the difference between an MT arbor with a "Tang" and one with a "Drawbar Thread"?
A:
With Tang: Used on machines that only apply downward pressure (Drill Presses, Lathe Tailstocks). They are held in by friction and ejected with a drift key.
With Drawbar Thread: Used on Milling Machines. A threaded rod (drawbar) pulls the arbor securely into the spindle so it doesn't vibrate loose and fall out during side-milling operations. Never use a tanged arbor in a milling machine.
Q3: How do I choose the correct size arbor for my setup?
A: You need to match two specifications:
Machine Side: Check your machine's manual or measure the spindle/tailstock to determine the Morse Taper size (e.g., MT2, MT3).
Chuck Side: Check the engraving on your drill chuck to find its mounting taper (e.g., B16, JT33). Example: If your lathe tailstock is MT3 and your chuck says "Mount B16", you need an MT3-B16 Arbor with Tang.
Q4: How do I remove an old drill chuck from the arbor?
A: Because it is a tight friction fit, the safest way to separate them is by using a set of drill chuck removal wedges. Insert the wedges between the back of the drill chuck and the shoulder of the arbor and tap them together to force the chuck off the taper without damaging either part.
Equip your lathes and drill presses with our rugged, precision-ground MT arbors.
