The SLN Side Lock End Mill Holder (commonly known as a Weldon holder) is the ultimate solution for heavy-duty CNC milling. While collet chucks are excellent for finishing and holding small tools, aggressive roughing operations generate immense helical forces that can literally pull an end mill out of a standard collet, instantly destroying the workpiece and the tool. The side lock holder completely eliminates this risk. It uses one or two high-strength set screws that drive directly into the flat machined on the side of the cutting tool's shank (the Weldon flat), mechanically locking the tool in place and providing a positive, non-slip drive.
Absolute Anti-Pullout Security: The mechanical locking action of the set screw against the Weldon flat guarantees that the end mill cannot spin or be pulled out of the holder, no matter how aggressive the depth of cut or feed rate.

Q1: When should I use a Side Lock (SLN) holder instead of an ER Collet Chuck?
A: You should use an SLN Side Lock holder for heavy roughing, high material removal rate (MRR) milling, and machining tough materials (like titanium or hardened steel) where the cutting forces are extreme. ER collets rely on friction and are better suited for finishing, drilling, or light milling where high concentricity is the priority over sheer holding power.
Q2: What is a "Weldon Flat"?
A: A Weldon flat is a precision-machined flat surface on the cylindrical shank of an end mill or drill. The set screw of the side lock holder seats directly against this flat to prevent the tool from rotating or pulling out.
Q3: Can I use a tool with a perfectly round shank in a Side Lock holder?
A:No. If you tighten the set screw against a round shank, it will crush and deform the shank, runout will be terrible, and the tool will eventually slip. You must either use tools manufactured with a Weldon flat or carefully grind a flat onto the shank yourself before using it in an SLN holder.
Q4: How tight should I make the set screw?
A: The set screw should be tightened firmly using a high-quality hex key. However, over-tightening can distort the tool holder bore or strip the threads. Always ensure the set screw is perfectly aligned with the flat on the tool shank before tightening.
